Denise Merrifield's extensive career at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office spans three decades, showcasing a relentless pursuit of justice. Her legal journey includes serving in the Homicide Bureau for 11 years, where she tried 29 homicide cases, reflecting her adeptness in handling some of the most challenging legal battles. As the Deputy Bureau Chief of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau, she led a team of 15 Assistant District Attorneys in prosecuting severe cases involving the most vulnerable—children subjected to physical and sexual abuse, as well as victims of domestic violence.
Merrifield also supervised the Major Crimes Bureau, where her leadership extended to overseeing prosecution efforts against violent felonies including robbery, burglary, rape, and assault. This wealth of experience in law enforcement has undoubtedly enriched her role as a councilwoman, bringing a seasoned perspective to local governance.
After retiring in 2018, Merrifield transitioned to academia as an adjunct professor at Touro Law School, where she teaches NY Evidence and coaches law students in national mock trial competitions, nurturing the next generation of legal professionals.
Currently serving the residents of Riverhead as a Town Councilwoman, Merrifield applies her comprehensive background in law to address and strategize on issues impacting the community.
